The Rock City

Located in the banks of river Kaveri, its history dates back to centuries.. The credit for the name 'Rock City' goes to the Uchchi Pillayaar koil (Rock Fort Temple). This is a fascinating Rock cut temple with several inscriptions from Pallavas and Cholas. The age of the rock is more than 3 billion years(awesome!!). This temple encompasses Uchchi Pillayar and Taayumanaswamy temple. Excavations of brilliant cave temples are also found in this rock.

Further the city girdles
Srirangam, an oldest temple edged by Kaveri at one end and Kollidam at the other. It is the second biggest hindu temple of the world whose date of origin is still unidentified.
Kallanai Dam, built by the great king Karikala Cholan is regarded as one of the oldest dam of the world. This is the begining place of Kaveri Delta. It is said that the kollidam dam was built by a British, after closely studying this Dam's engineering. Could you imagine how such a massive strong structure was built before the invention of cement?

It is distressful to learn that, inspite of having such beautiful, massive, oldest structures and architectures, recognition is lacking.
Albeit fused with Trichy now, Urayur was an famous ancient city and also the capital city of early cholas. One can imagine the beauty of this place through Kalki's Parthiban Kanavu.
Thiruvanaikaval, is adored as one among the Panchabutha stalams. This temple represents Water. The compound wall of this temple extends over a mile. There is a myth that Lord Shiva himself was involved in the construction of this temple.
Thiruverumbur, after the temple Thiru Erumbeeshwarar on top of the gigantic hill, is said to be a protected heritage site. The myth for this
name Erumbeeshwarar is Shiva Lingam transformed to an Ant hill to help the devargal to climb on it in to worship.
St.Joseph church, built a century ago, its
Sunday congregation is said to be attended by more than 6000 people.
Displaying a unique gothic architecture, this church is a famous replica of Basillica of Lourdes, France.

There are some little known places also, which adds honor to Trichy like Koviladi Appa kudathaan. This temple, located in a very beautifully vegetated area near Kallanai is claimed to be older than Srirangam. The story behind the name indicates that the lord in disguise requested a pot of Appam (sweet made of rice) from a king, and thus the king was freed from his curse. Henceforth, Appam is offered to lord during Pooja
everyday.
The next under the category of little known places falls the Thirueengoi malai, also referred as Himalayas of south, is a Margathaeswarar (Eswaran) temple atop a hill. The idol or the lingam of this temple is made up of Maragatham(
Emerald). This temple situated amidst a scenic area alongside river Kaveri is in Thottiam.
There are more other places also to this list. Since I do not want to make this lengthy I halt with this.
Proud to stem from this city.
